And yet the material origins and<br>manifestations of data matter. Without considering them, a fabricated data<br>set may be indistinguishable from an au\u00adthen\u00adtic one. As public discourse is<br>full of controversies around facts and counterfacts, the gaps between data<br>and the world become increasingly troubling. \u00ad These controversies often<br>revolve around how data \u00ad were generated and facts \u00ad were established\u2014something that traditional visualization methods \u00ad don\u2019t account for. Even in<br>less contested situations, reconciling a statistical model with personal expe-<br>rience is difficult.
